Guernica - una obra de arte única: indefinite adjectives and pronouns

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can use indefinite adjectives and indefinite pronouns to describe the painting 'Guernica'.

Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. Pablo Picasso was a Spanish artist and key 20th-century figure, known for co-pioneering the Cubist movement.
      2. 'Guernica' is Picasso's famous anti-war painting, showing the horror of the Spanish Civil War bombing in 1937.
      3. 'Alguno/a' and 'algunos/as' mean 'some', 'any' or 'a', 'an' and are used in affirmative sentences and questions.
      4. 'Ninguno' and 'ninguna' mean 'none', 'no-one', 'not a single one'; they are always used in the singular form.
      5. Indefinite adjectives and indefinite pronouns are identical apart from the masculine singular form.

      Keywords

      • Indefinite adjective - describes a noun in a non-specific sense, e.g. 'some', 'even', 'each'

      • Indefinite pronoun - words 'some', 'a', 'an', 'one', 'any', 'no-one', 'none' and 'anyone' that replace a noun in the sentence

      Common misconception

There is no difference between 'ningún' and 'ninguno'.

'Ningún' and 'ninguno' look very similar but they are used differently in Spanish. 'Ninguno' is a pronoun and it replaces a masculine singular noun. 'Ningún' is an indefinite adjective and it comes before a masculine singular noun.

      Teacher tip

After exploring the painting 'Guernica' in this lesson, teachers might suggest that pupils find out more about the Spanish Civil War, e.g. on BBC Bitesize.
