Key learning points

  1. In Spanish, to express a feeling, emotional reaction or opinion, you often use verbs of emotion.
  2. Verbs of emotion ('gustar', 'encantar', 'dar', 'molestar', etc.) are followed by an infinitive or the subjunctive.
  3. When verbs of emotion are followed by the conjunction 'que', use the subjunctive.
  4. Use a verb of emotion + 'que' + subjunctive for reacting to someone else's action or situation.

Keywords

  • Subjunctive - verb form that indicates actions which are uncertain, wished for, or that have not yet happened; its forms are different from the indicative

  • Verb of emotion - expresses a feeling, emotional reaction, or psychological state; these verbs often introduce the subjunctive after 'que'

Common misconception

Verbs of emotion like 'gustar', 'encantar', 'dar', 'molestar', etc. are always followed by the infinitive.

Use a verb of emotion + infinitive to react to your own actions. Use a verb of emotion + 'que' + subjunctive to react to someone else’s. Both forms often talk about emotions, but the change of subject triggers the use of subjunctive.
