﻿Hello, my name is Jess and today we're going to be looking at different questions, like who? What? Where? And what is happening? We're going to be looking at pictures in a story and answering the questions. For this lesson you will need the book "What Do I Look Like" by Nick Sharratt, and the questions that are on this page. You may want to take a photo of them or print them off to use with the story. If you do not have the book, do not worry, you can follow it on the screen. Press pause while you get things ready. Getting ready. There are a few things that you'll need to prepare before starting this session. A quiet environment with minimal distractions, so maybe turn off the TV. Find a place that your child is happy to work. This could be on the floor, at a table, outside, or any other place that they feel comfortable. Consider your child's sensory needs. This may mean checking lighting and other sensory distractions. Also think about your language when talking, keeping language to a minimum. Things don't always go to plan. Be positive and just enjoy the session. You know your child best so if you know a resource that may work better and they enjoy more, please use that. Press pause while you get your things ready. In today's lesson, we will be using the book, "What Do I Look Like?" by Nick Sharratt, published by Walker Books. The book that we are going to use today is "What Do I Look Like?" by Nick Sharratt. We're going to be looking at the questions that we've spoken about before and how you can use these in your story. What do you look like? I look like this. Adults, you could ask the question, "Where is the?" and see if they can find where the toothbrush or the toothpaste is, or maybe where the soap is. Can they use symbols or verbal language or gestures to point? You can also have a look at how the little boy is feeling and their emotions, and maybe you could find a mirror and put faces in the mirror to show happy or sad faces. When I'm having fun, I look like this. You could ask the questions, "Find me the girl who is skipping" to see if they could point to the girl or tell you where the girl skipping is. You may also ask, "Find me the cat or find me the dog" and see if your child could point and gesture or use symbols or verbal language to tell you what they can see. When I'm a scary monster, I looked like this. You could point to the cat or the washing and ask the question, "What is this called?" Can they match the symbol to the object or point to where it is? When I bang my thumb, I look like this. This is a page you could look at and talk through about what you can see such as the train or the bricks, the book, and the Teddy bear. Close the page at the book and ask your child, "What did you see?" And see if they can match the symbols or point to the symbols, or maybe tell you what they can remember seeing in the story. You can then open the story back up and have a look if you were right. When the cat sees a nuisance, I look like this. You could ask the question, adults, "Find me the bananas," or "Find me the cat on the table" and see if they could point to where the cat is. You could also count how many plates there are or how many chairs there are and see if they can write down the number or tell you how many, or maybe show you. When daddy gives me ice cream, I look like this. The question for this page that you could use is you could point to the cooker and say, "What is this called?" Or point to the kettle and say, "What is this called?" Maybe you can ask them where these are found in their own house and maybe you could go and find them in your own kitchen. When I'm ready for bed, I look like this. You could ask the question, "What did you see?" I can see the mommy and the daddy are reading and the little boy is very tired. And when I'm fast asleep, I look like this. Maybe you could ask the question, "Where is the bear?" Or "Where is the car?" Or maybe ask the child to tell you where their own bed is. Can they show you or tell you where their own bed is? These are just some of the questions that you can ask. You could also ask questions such as who, what, where and when questions, and maybe you want to choose a different book to do this with and when you're reading books, these are the questions that you could use. You could print them off and then have them for every story that you use to begin to have conversations about the book and engage in books. Now that we have looked at the book and looked at the questions we can ask, maybe you could find a different book at home or different objects to ask the questions with. To make this lesson easier, you could use what and where question cards. Use physical or photographs of objects from the book to deepen understanding. Use the level two set of questions which can be found on the resources slide. Ask them to answer or sequence the symbols to make a sentence. Use the symbols in different contexts, such as around the home or at the park. More ideas. Choose your child's favourite book and ask questions using the prompt cards.
