﻿Hello, my name is Helen and I am your teacher. Today's lesson, is lesson three of four in the Building Understanding, Number Unit. Today, we're going to be looking at comparing groups of objects. For this lesson you will need objects to count that you can find in your house. I will use sweets, bricks and spoons today but you could use anything like coins or even pieces of pasta. You will also need a number line. You can use a number line that's been drawn on a big piece of paper with numerals and the correct number of dots against each numeral. So now you know who I am and you've got your resources ready for today's lesson. Let's find out what we're going to do today. Firstly, I will show you how to compare groups of objects in different ways. Next, you will be able to have a go at comparing groups of objects. Finally, you'll complete an activity where you will show me more or less than a number. Which group has more dots? Let's count the first group. Count with me. One, two. Let's count the second group. As you can see, I have written the numerals out and I've also drawn some dots to help me when I'm counting them out. I've also got two groups of sweets and I am going to compare these groups of sweets. Using my number line, help me find out which group has more. Let's count the first group. Count with me. That helps me to make sure I've counted them all. Which group has more bricks? Fantastic. It was this group, three bricks. Let's try that again with a different number. Which group has more bricks? You're right, it's this group with three bricks. Fantastic work. Now it's your turn to compare groups of objects. Place some of your objects in two groups. Can you identify which group has more and which group has less? Repeat this task using a different number of objects every time. Pause the video to complete your task. Ask an adult to choose some of your objects. Can you show them more objects? Can you show them less objects? Remember to count them out to check. To make this easier, you could try comparing groups of up to three objects. You could arrange each group of objects in lines to compare them. And you can ask an adult to count with you when you're counting each group of objects. To make it harder, when you have identified which group has more objects, you could move some objects to make the other group have more objects. You could ask an adult to demonstrate comparing groups of objects, but making an error sometimes. Can you identify their errors? For more ideas on how to compare groups of objects, you could split some sweets between you and your friend. Who has more sweets? Who has less sweets? You could put some toys in two toy boxes or peas on two plates. Which toy box or plate has more or less toys or peas? Wow, what a fantastic lesson you've had.
