﻿Hi, I'm really looking forward to our lesson today. I hope you are too. Before we get started, this is just a little reminder. We're here to support any approaches you might already be using and any work you might have already been set. We know that this lesson is going to be going out to so many different children and families. So if you're not sure about anything or have any questions, then please do contact your usual therapy team. Now we know a bit about our visual memory. Let's explore remembering things we've seen in order, because that's really important for things like remembering the alphabet, or being able to remember your telephone number. So what is visual sequential memory. Sounds a little bit scary, but it really isn't. So it's how we're able to remember the order of things or events that we have seen. And that's really important to help us learn. So we'll have to remember the order of, for example, getting dressed, that you put your socks on before you put your shoes on. Okay, and that you put your tie on, after you've put your shirt on, for example. So it helps us to remember the order of things such as our numbers, one, two, three, four, five, and not one, two seven, eight, nine, okay? And the letters of the alphabet. And so it'll help us remember the steps and learn the steps, for example, when we're making a sandwich or having a shower or brushing our teeth. And sometimes if we have difficulties, we might get really confused, but also really frustrated, and we might forget like the order that we've put something on, or put our underwear over our trousers. That would be just so annoying, yeah? So, pause the video now to get the items that you're going to need. You're going to need some beads, or other small toys to make patterns with, and some magnetic letters or numbers. So for the first activity, you're going to ask an adult or your activity partner to make a pattern for you. So you could use beads on a string or some Lego blocks or other construction blocks that are clipped together. And you can then copy that pattern yourself. Okay, you can make this trickier by repeating the pattern over and over, and they can also give you more complicated patterns to copy. If you don't have beads or you don't have Lego, you could simply take five crayons and arrange them in a pattern. Or you can have the adult draw some little shapes on a page for you, and you could then copy that pattern and remember it. Okay. Pause the video now to try pattern copying. Our next activity is a little bit more physical, so I really quite like this one. So you're going to have an adult or your activity partner stand opposite to you or you could be sitting, yet you don't have to stand. So they're going to do a number of body movements for you to watch, and then they're going to say, go, and you've got to remember what they did and copy it, okay. You can mix it up and you can do all sorts of things like short dance routines, or karate moves. If you want a bigger challenge, then you can do more movements in a row, okay. And if you really want to challenge yourself is you can try copying the movements in reverse, or going back to old ones to see if you remember them, okay. So some simple ones you can do, see if you can copy what I do, and if you can remember these, are you ready? Let's go. So I'm going to go. Okay. How did you do? You ready for another one? How about... Did you get that one? Excellent. Let's try this one, let's see if I can make it a bit trickier for you. How about... Okay. Excellent. And you can add different things into this. So you could say right, let's do silly faces, so I could go... Yeah, and see if you can remember those, okay. And you can also do hand movements. So you could go something like, click, clap, click, click, clap, and see if you can remember that. Yeah. And this is also great 'cause you can do it anywhere. If you don't have toys, you can just use your body and you could say, hop to the left, hop to the right, and then sit down and see if they can copy that. Or I could be doing that, then doing that, and doing that, and that. Okay, have fun. Pause the video now to try copying some movements. For our next activity, we're going to be hunting some magnets. So ask an adult to hide all the letters of the alphabet for you or say all the numbers from zero to nine. And what you're going to do is hunt around looking for these, but once you find them, you have to put them in the order that they would normally appear in and not the order that you might find them, okay. So if you were to look and you found number three, and then you found number one, you'd put number one first, yeah, and then you'd move on that way. You could also do this by having picture cards of activities such as, sequences for brushing your teeth. And you could have step one, undo the toothpaste on a picture and all of those like that. And then you could find them and then put them in the correct order, okay? So have a go at that and restart the video once you're finished. So there are loads of ways to make learning or improving your visual sequential memory, easier or harder. So you can start off using really simple patterns or really simple body movements, or you can have fewer steps. So if we were looking at brushing your teeth, step one might be, put the toothpaste on, step two, brush, step three, rinse. Or to make that more complicated, we could have, step one, undo the toothpaste, then put the toothpaste on, then wet the brush, put the lid back on the toothpaste, then brush your teeth, then rinse your mouth, then clean the sink and then dry your mouth, okay. So you can add loads more steps to that to make it trickier, or also just to make it easier. Remember do the best you can, practise, practise, practise, have fun.
