Using digital maps to explore changes in our local area

This Unit links directly to 'Local area: Why are trees and forests important?', where pupils will continue to evaluate the local area by investigating green spaces and trees.

This unit builds on 'UK region: Why is the Lake District a National Park?' in which pupils learnt about issues at a regional scale in the Lake District, and it develops 'Local area: How is it changing?' in which local area change was identified and recorded. This unit is about evaluating change with a futures’ perspective.  

This unit develops pupils’ fieldwork and enquiry skills through a local investigation into change. Pupils use maps, tools and data to explore how their area is changing, collect and present information, and reflect on possible changes in the future.

Local area: what needs changing?

A questionnaire is a set of questions used to collect information or data.

An interview means talking to people to gather information.

Techniques are the particular ways of doing things.

A risk assessment looks at what hazards we might come across and how to keep us safe.

A hazard is a potential danger that could affect our safety.

Something that is accessible is easy to get to, enter or use.

Evidence is a fact or piece of information that helps to prove that something is or is not true.

Data is a collection of facts or figures that can be analysed to provide information.

A service is a system that supplies a public need, for example waste collection.

If something in a particular category or group varies it is different in some way to the other things in that category or group.

A report is a detailed written or spoken presentation, for example, of a geographical enquiry.

You can use a table to present data or information in a grid using rows and columns

A graph is a diagram or picture that displays data.

To analyse is to study something in close detail.

To interpret is to decide on the meaning of something.

Something that is purposeful is done on purpose to achieve an aim.

Something that is preferred is liked or wanted more than the other options.

Futures are periods of time that are yet to come.

A presentation is a talk that gives information about something.

To evaluate is to form an opinion or judgement on something after considering it carefully.
