Description

In this unit, pupils study a specific historical environment. They learn about the local context of this area and the way in which it interacted with national issues and the themes they have studied in their thematic study.

This unit uses and builds on the previous key stage 4 unit where pupils learnt about a theme through British history and the experiences of those touched by that theme. This unit prepares pupils for any further study of Britain in periods in which these historical environments are set, or of any other historical environments.

  1. National context of post-war Britain
  2. Local context of Notting Hill
  3. The influence of Caribbean cultures on Notting Hill
  4. Racism and policing in 1950s Notting Hill
  5. Black activism in the Notting Hill area
  6. The Mangrove Nine
  7. Notting Hill - sources and historical context
  8. Writing about Notting Hill and its sources

  • A strong working knowledge of the relevant thematic study with which this unit is paired
