Description

In this unit, pupils consolidate and extend their knowledge of history before 1066 by examining how women's roles in British society have changed from the medieval period to the present.

This unit uses and builds on multiple key stage 1, 2 and 3 units that have discussed the role and position of women. This unit prepares pupils for other thematic studies in key stage 4, where the focus is also on following a specific idea or theme across a broad expanse of time.

  1. Women and the medieval Church
  2. The role of women in the early modern period
  3. Women and the Industrial Revolution
  4. The right to vote and the role of women in the 1920s and 1930s
  5. The role of women in post-war Britain, 1945-1975
  6. The changing role of women

  • Pupils know that societies and roles evolve over time due to various factors, such as social movements and economic changes.
  • Pupils know that historically, women often had fewer rights and opportunities compared to men.
  • Pupils know that history involves both change and continuity, meaning that while some aspects of society and roles evolve over time, others remain consistent.
