In conversation it is important to listen carefully to the tense of questions before answering. Otherwise your answers might not be relevant. For example, 'What did you do after school yesterday?' 'I usually do my homework.'
Pupils often trip up in conversational interactions because they lack practice in understanding unplanned questions. It is worth pupils spending ample time across the secondary phase practising understanding as well as responding to unprepared questions, giving relatively short but clear answers.
