Key learning points
- Aller + infinitive describes what is going to happen; it tends to be used in more informal conversation and writing.
- The simple future expresses what will happen; it tends to be used in more formal contexts for predictions or promises.
- Most consonants at the end of words are silent e.g. tu mangeras.
- It is helpful to practise verb manipulation, e.g. jouer, je joue, je vais jouer, je jouerai.
Keywords
Aller + infinitive - 2-verb future structure meaning 'going + infinitive'
Simple future - French 1-verb future tense meaning 'will + verb'
Common misconception
All -er verbs use the infinitive as the stem for the simple future tense.
Some -er verbs require a small change to the stem before adding the correct simple future ending, for example 'acheter', 'compléter' and 'protéger'. For each verb, the first -e changes to -è.
Equipment
Mini whiteboards and pens would be useful if available.
