Children are unsure as to why, when the dividend and divisor are equal, the quotient is equal to 1
Use physical resources e.g. counters or children to represent both sharing and grouping contexts to help children to visualise the idea before applying to abstract equations.
Each learning cycle explores the idea for different structures of division to show children that 'if the divisor is equal to the dividend, then the quotient will be 1' is true for both grouping and sharing contexts.
