Lesson details
Key learning points
- There are 60 minutes in an hour.
- There are 24 hours in a day.
- Understand that the clock face shows hours and minutes on the same scale.
Keywords
Minute - A unit of time equal to 60 seconds. There are 60 minutes in an hour.
Hour - A unit of time equal to one of 24 equal parts of the day.
Day - The 24-hour period from midnight through to the following midnight.
Common misconception
Children may understand a day as the amount of time in which they are awake.
The lesson counts and names each of the 24 hours, using morning, evening and night. Take time to discuss what the children will typically be doing during these hours, including when they will usually be asleep.
Knowing there are 24 hours in a day and 60 minutes in an hour are facts that should be committed to memory. Offer plenty of opportunities at various points throughout the day for pupils to recall these. For example, 'We now have an hour till break time, how many minutes is this equal to?'
