Discussion: Should animals be kept in zoos?

﻿Hello and welcome. My name is Mr Santhanam, and this is lesson five of 10. At the moment we've been talking lots about discussion. And a big part of discussion, is all about giving your opinion. Sometimes we have to think about the good side of things and the bad side of things. Today's learning objective is to think about how we can give our opinions about what we have read. Before we begin, I want to ask you your opinion about some things. What do you think about strawberries? My opinion about strawberries is that they are juicy and sweet. And they make me feel all summery inside. They remind me of summer holidays and going to the beach and having fun and really enjoying myself. So that's my opinion about strawberries. What's your opinion about strawberries? What do you think? I heard someone saying that it reminds them of playing outside in their garden and sprinkling sugar on top of them. So it really, really makes them happy. But I heard someone else also saying that a bad thing about strawberries is that if you eat too many of them, they makes you very sick. Oh dear. So that person is thinking about the good things about it and the bad things. I agree that strawberries are really nice because they are yummy and sweet. But I disagree that strawberries are great because you can sometimes eat too many of them and they can make you a little bit sick. What is your opinion about dogs? My opinion about dogs is that they are so soft and fluffy. And that they're really fun to play with. But my other opinion about dogs is that they sometimes get very messy and they get their muddy paw prints all over you. What's your opinion about dogs? Ooh I had someone saying that they love to throw sticks for dogs and these dogs can go off and run and catch them. I had another person saying that they like dogs, but only when they are puppies. I had another person saying that they don't like dogs at all because they find them a little bit scary when they bark. All of those opinions are valid. And all of your voices are going to be valued today. So I really hope that you give your opinion and you explain your reasoning. Because everyone's voice is valued. Let's get started on our lessons about opinions. In this lesson you are going to need some paper, a pencil and your brilliant brain. Pause your video now while you go and get those things, Whoa, you were such a speedy Gonzalez then. Amazing, let's get started. Our agenda for today is this, we're going to start off with our grammar focus. We are then going to have a go at spelling activity. We're then going to think about how we can do better of our own opinions in our minds. And then finally, we're going to think about how we can explain our own opinions using our writing. First of all, let's have a look at our grammar focus. At the moment we have been focusing on question marks, exclamation marks and full stops. Can you point to the question mark? Well done. It's the one on the end over there. Can you ask me a question that would need a question mark at the end? Oh my favourite colour is blue. Thank you for asking. Another question might be, how old are you? How are you? Would you like a cup of tea? Shall we do the question mark action together? You can do this to help you remember what the question mark is. Are you ready? It's like a squiggle and then at the end. Can you point to the full stop? That's right, it's the one on this end here. Just a little dot. What's the action that we do for full stop? Can you remember? Just one dot on the line? Amazing. What kind of sentence would you use for a full stop? That's right, for a full stop, we're just making simple statements and delivering simple facts. So things like, "I like plants." "I have two cats." "My eyes are green." Amazing. We're not asking questions. We're not saying in a powerful way. We're just delivering a simple fact. Now, can you point to the exclamation Mark? That's right, it's the one in the middle. Do you remember the action for the exclamation mark? Let's try it again. It's a line and then a dot at the end. And we know that when we're using the exclamation mark, we are saying things in a powerful way. Can you think of an exclamation? That's right. How messy! What a mess! This is so messy! You can Always have an exclamation mark on the end. To show that it is said in a powerful way. Every single sentence must end with one of these punctuation marks. Let's have a look. What would you like for dinner? What a beautiful dog! I want a hot dog. Can you see how I've used each of these punctuation marks to finish my sentence? Can you point to the question mark? can you point to the full stop? Can you point to the exclamation mark? Why don't you have a go at saying these sentences in the right tone of voice? What would you like for dinner? What a beautiful dog! I want a hot dog. Okay. You're now going to have a go at putting the right punctuation mark at the end of these sentences. Think about how you might say them to help you. Say it in your head or say it out loud to think about which punctuation mark would go in the end. Would it be a question mark? Would it be a full stop? Or would it be an exclamation mark? Are you asking a question? Are you making a statement? Or are you exclaiming something in a powerful way? Have a look through these sentences and think about what punctuation mark belongs in the end. Pause your video now, while you do that. Pause your video now, while you write down each of the sentences, with the correct punctuation mark at the end. Wow, I saw some great sentence writing then. Well done. Let's move on. Okay, it is now time for us do our spellings. We know that tricky words are words which do not let you just sound them out. So they're a little bit tricky like that. In order for us to know our tricky words, we have to be able to look at them, remember them and lock them in our brains and never forget them. And that is how we recognise them. Can you remember any of our tricky words that we've done so far? One, I have one strawberry Love. I love strawberries. Your. Here is your plate of strawberries. Once. Once I ate 10 strawberries in a row Be. I would like to be eating strawberries right now. Do you think you might remember these spellings here? Pause the video now while you write them down. I know that a great strategy check, is that I can look at a word, say it in a sentence so it makes sense. Cover the word, then write the word next to it. And then I can check my spelling. That way I know which ones I still need to work on and which ones I've got locked in my brain. Why not give yourself a little spelling test right now to see which ones you know and which ones you need to remember. Okay, we've got to the part of the lesson where we're going to really think about how to develop our own opinions about what is read. To explain your opinion, it's really important that we use full sentences. So I might say, I think... I believe... I feel... And in my opinion. Have a read of this part of our discussion piece. I want you to think about, do you agree? Or do you disagree? I remember Arnold said that some people don't believe that zoos are very nice places. He said, firstly, they think it is cruel because animals are locked in. They want animals to be free. Now I want you to put aside what Arnold said and put aside what Fiona said. I want you to think about what you think. In order to do this you're really going to have to think about what you feel in your mind, but also what you feel in your heart. Do you agree? Or do you disagree with these statements? What do you think? Put your thumb up if you agree with this and put your thumb down if you disagree. Let's read the statement one more time and think about whether you agree or disagree. Firstly, they think it is cruel because animals are locked in. Do you agree or disagree? They want animals to be free. Do you agree with that or disagree? What do you think? How do we make up our mind about this? It can be quite confusing. Here are some questions that you can use to really help you to think about what your opinion is. Remember your opinion is what you think and why you think that. What words are the most important in this statement? How would you feel if you were an animal? Would you like to live in a zoo? And do you think that animals are as important as humans? These are all things that we can think about in order to develop our opinions. Have you have ever been to the zoo? What did you think of it there? Did you think it was cruel? Did you think the animals wanted to be free? Or did they like it there? You can use your own experience as well. Let's have a look at these questions a little bit closer. Now, the question says, what words are the most important here? I've looked through this statement and I think that the words which really stand out to me are cruel and free. Some people think that zoos are cruel because the animals are stuck in cages. Now I need to think about whether or not I agree with that or not. What do you think? Have you been to a zoo that you thought was cruel and unkind? Maybe you've been to a zoo and you've seen the animals being really happy. And they might have amazing enclosures. With lots of space to roam around. It's up to you to think about your own experience and your own opinions. Some people want the animals to be free. Do you agree? Do you think they should be free? What if we just let them out into the wild? Do you think they would be okay? Would they be happy? What do you think? Personally, I have been to lots of zoos where the zoos treat the animals quite well from what I can see. They are fed well and also they have got lots and lots of room to roam around. Some animals are born into zoos as well. So if you were to release them into the wild, I think they would not survive. Because they would not know how to look after themselves. So although they are not able to live in the wild, I think they are looked after really, really well. And the zookeepers absolutely love them. So I think they have a nice life. That's how I communicated my opinion by using this question to help me. Let's have a look at the next one. How would you feel if you were an animal? would you like to be locked in? Or would you want to be free? What do you think? Can you explain your opinion? Let's have a look at the next one. Would you like to live in a zoo? What do you think? What is your opinion? And do you think animals are as important as humans? As humans, we are allowed to walk down the street. We can go to the shops if we want to, we can go to the park. We can even go on holiday if we like. But can animals in the zoo do that? Can they do whatever they like? I don't know about that one. I think they have to really rely on the zookeepers. And I think also they have to wait until the zookeepers give them food as well. They can't just make to the shops. They have to really rely on the people looking after them. I did once see an elephant in a zoo that was not being treated very nicely. And that made me really sad. And I remember thinking, "I don't think I would want to be treated like that." He was being poked with a stick. And I know that I would be very, very sad, if I was poked with a stick. Let's have a look at the next piece of writing. Firstly, many animals are in danger of dying out. We call this becoming extinct. The zoo helps keep these animals alive. Do you agree with this or do you disagree with this? Do you have any knowledge or know any facts that might help you explain your point? Do you have an experience that might help you to explain your point? Next. Don't forget to put your thumb up, if you agree and your thumb down to agree. If you have a reason for saying you agree or disagree, that's even better. You can pause the video and write down that idea. Secondly, they argue that animals which usually hunt. Secondly, they argue that animals, which usually live by hunting can not do this in a zoo. They are just given food which makes them lazy and sad. Do you agree with this or do you disagree? Why do you agree? And why do you disagree? Secondly, when people see animals in zoos, they care more about looking after nature, which is so important so that they take better care of nature. Do you agree with this point? Do you disagree? Do we have to go to zoos in order to care about nature? Is there another way that we could care about nature? Or is going to zoos actually really helpful for us to look after animals and plants? Thumbs up if you agree or thumbs down if you disagree. Remember you've got to think about why you agree or disagree. We're now going to have a go explaining our opinions. For this part, you're going to need a pencil and some paper. Now that we've thought really deeply about the zoo and whether or not we agree or disagree about certain things and why, we're now going to think about these questions. Remember, you can use your own personal experiences. Things that you've done or experienced. And any fact that you might know to help you explain your opinions. The first question is, would you rather be invisible or be able to fly? What's your opinion? And why do you think that? You can start your sentence with, I think... I believe... In my opinion... I think this because... Don't forget to write down your idea. In a full sentence and give a reason why. Pause the video now, while you write down your answer. I said that I would rather be able to fly cause that means I'd be able to travel all over the world. And I think also I'd be able to see some amazing places. It would also give me lots and lots of freedom. When I look up at the birds in the sky, they seem so happy to be flying wherever they like. And I would love to be as free as them. You might want to choose this question instead. Would you rather be able to talk to animals? Or to speak any language in the world? You can start your sentence with. I think.. I believe... In my opinion... Or I think this because... Don't forget to write down your answer in a full sentence. Or you might want to choose this question. Only girls should be allowed to play with dolls. Do you agree with this or disagree? You can say, I think... I believe... In my opinion... Or I think this because... What do you think? Don't forget to write in a full sentence and explain your opinion. Pause the video now while you choose one question to answer.
