Our likes and dislikes
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can share my opinion and explain why.
Key learning points
- Things you like or dislike are called your 'opinions'.
- Using the word 'because' will allow you to explain why you like or dislike something.
- Speaking in full sentences helps the listener understand what is being said.
- When talking with someone, it is important to take turns and listen to what the other person is saying.
Keywords
Speaking - using your voice to talk to someone
Listening - paying attention to what someone is saying
Opinion - what a person thinks or believes
Explain - to give a reason for an opinion
Common misconception
Pupils may try to give extended reasons for their opinions and then lose their full sentence structure.
Provide clear speaking frames and model sentence stems for the children to encourage them to speak in full, clear sentences. They only need to give one reason for each opinion.
Teacher tip
You could use one of the much loved children's books 'You Choose' by Nick Sharratt or 'Would you Rather?' by John Burningham as a stimulus for this lesson. Pupils could share their opinions on the different pages presented in the book.
