Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Plan the placement of a sculpture within a mixed-media piece.
  2. Use paint to enhance the appearance of a sculpture.
  3. Evaluate and improve an artwork using feedback.

Keywords

  • Background - the part of the artwork that appears furthest from the viewer

  • Sculpture - a three-dimensional piece of art made by shaping or combining materials

  • Evaluate - when we think about our artwork to understand how good it is and how we could make it better

Common misconception

Pupils may paint the fox and background in similar colours, making the sculpture blend in.

Remind pupils that the fox should stand out - encourage warm, bright colours for the fox against darker shades in the background.

Pupils will be creating their mixed-media piece so will need their clay sculpture and collage background. Use photographs of real animals to support colour choices. Encourage pupils to test brushstrokes on scrap paper before painting their sculpture.
