Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Learn how to use the coil and pinch techniques to create a clay pot.
  2. Correct application of slip ensures that clay sculptures are less likely to break during the drying or firing process.
  3. Develop creative skills in adding textures and personal designs to your pottery.

Keywords

  • Coil technique - a method of shaping clay using long rolls of clay stacked on top of each other

  • Pinch technique - a method of shaping clay by pinching it between fingers to form a pot or bowl

  • Slip - a liquid mixture of clay and water used to join pieces of clay

Common misconception

Even if the coils don't stick together, the pot will still hold together once it dries or after it's fired.

Coils need to be properly joined using slip to ensure they don’t separate during the drying or firing process.

Encourage students to apply firm pressure when stacking coils and use water or slip to seal the joints. Remind them to smooth both the inside and outside of their pots. Focus on symmetry and balance - these are key to creating well-formed and stable pottery pieces.
