Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Local landscapes can be important to people for different reasons.
  2. Photographers can choose to use the rule of thirds to aid their composition.
  3. Photographers consider their light carefully, and the effect it will have upon their composition.

Keywords

  • Landscape - the view of a place, including both natural and human-made features

  • Composition - how we arrange or organise the things we want to take a picture of

  • Rule of thirds - a guideline to help make pictures look more balanced

Common misconception

Urban landscapes cannot contain any natural features.

Remind children that both natural and urban landscapes can have a mix of natural and human-made features, but natural landscapes focus more on nature, and urban landscapes focus more on buildings and roads.

For Task B, pupils will need access to photographic equipment such as tablets. Ask children to explore their subject from different angles, and experiment with different lighting and photographic features. If it is challenging to access a local landscape, pupils could work on the school site.
