Create a low relief ceramic tile: trace and transfer a design

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can prepare both my design and clay tile.

      Key learning points

      1. Artists can prepare a drawing to be traced by making the outlines darker.
      2. Artists might use tracing to make a copy of a full scale design.
      3. Guide sticks can be used to ensure clay is a consistent depth.

      Keywords

      • Trace - drawing over the outline of an image or shape to copy it

      • Design - the process of planning and creating something

      • Guide sticks - a tool used to ensure a consistent depth of clay

      Common misconception

The rolling pin does not have to rest on the guide sticks to ensure an even consistency of clay.

Remind children that the rolling pin should rest on both of the guide sticks.

      Teacher tip

After this lesson, the clay needs to reach a leather hard consistency. Please see additional materials for extra guidence and managing drying times.
