Lesson details
Key learning points
- Consider how the top layer contributes to the overall visual appeal of the artwork. Does it create a strong focal point?
- Evaluate whether the top layer integrates well with the underlying layers.
- Are the brushstrokes, patterns, or materials used effectively to include detail and convey your intended message.
Keywords
Composition - the way the art elements are arranged in an artwork
Focal point - the area of an artwork that draws the viewer’s attention first
Integrate - to combine two or more parts so they work together as a unified whole
Disrupt - to interrupt or break the flow, structure, or harmony of something
Detail - the small, specific parts of an artwork that add texture, interest, and meaning.
Common misconception
More detail always makes an artwork better.
Too much detail—especially if it’s unfocused—can make an artwork feel cluttered, overwhelming, or take attention away from the focal point.

The practice tasks are also available as printable worksheets and some lessons have additional materials with extra material you might need for teaching the lesson.
The assessment exit quiz will test your pupils' understanding of the key learning points.
Our video is a tool for planning, showing how other teachers might teach the lesson, offering helpful tips, modelled explanations and inspiration for your own delivery in the classroom. Plus, you can set it as homework or revision for pupils and keep their learning on track by sharing an online pupil version of this lesson.
