3D design: the influence of sources on your investigations

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can identify and apply influences from sources to create original 3D work.

      Key learning points

      1. By utilising a wide range of source materials, sculptors enrich their creative processes, resulting in dynamic designs.
      2. Exploring sources introduces sculptors to various styles, concepts, and cultural influences, fostering creativity.

      Keywords

      • Source - the starting point or inspiration for design

      • Context - the cultural, historical, or social background of a source

      • Transforming - the process of changing a source into a new textile design

      Common misconception

A source is just something to copy.

Sources are not meant to be copied. They act as a starting point for creativity. Designers explore a source’s shapes, patterns, colours, or meanings and reinterpret them to create original work that reflects their own ideas and context.

      Teacher tip

Encourage pupils to see their source as a springboard, not a template. Many pupils may feel they need to copy their chosen image or object directly. Model how to extract shapes, textures, forms, or patterns from the source.

      Equipment

Sketching materials for documenting sources. For practical making, prepare clay, plaster, wire, paper, card and found materials.
