Benefits of information technology
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can explain how information technology helps us.
Key learning points
- IT devices can work together.
- We use IT because it makes tasks safer, easier and more accurate.
Keywords
Barcode - a line pattern that gives information to a computer
QR code - a square pattern that gives information to a computer
Common misconception
The only benefit of IT is that it allows us to complete what we need to do in less time.
IT has many other benefits, including making tasks more accurate, safer and easier to complete. Examples of this might be organising schedules or automating repetitive work.
Teacher tip
You should have a clear understanding of information technology devices used in a shop, as well as understand the difference between barcodes and QR codes. This is a good opportunity to get pupils to share their experiences of using IT.
Equipment
Pupils could be shown a selection of QR codes and barcodes to compare the difference.

We use learning cycles to break down learning into key concepts or ideas linked to the learning outcome. Each learning cycle features explanations with checks for understanding and practice tasks with feedback. All of this is found in our slide decks, ready for you to download and edit. The practice tasks are also available as printable worksheets and some lessons have additional materials with extra material you might need for teaching the lesson.
The assessment exit quiz will test your pupils' understanding of the key learning points.
Our video is a tool for planning, showing how other teachers might teach the lesson, offering helpful tips, modelled explanations and inspiration for your own delivery in the classroom. Plus, you can set it as homework or revision for pupils and keep their learning on track by sharing an online pupil version of this lesson.
