      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can use a computer to present data as a pictogram.

      Key learning points

      1. Tally charts are designed to organise data.
      2. Pictograms can be created from tally charts.
      3. Pictograms show us information.

      Keywords

      • Information - important knowledge or facts from the data collected

      • Pictogram - a chart that uses pictures to display data

      Common misconception

It is quicker to create a pictogram by hand than trying to create one on a computer.

When creating a pictogram on a computer, it is much quicker and the pictures will be uniform in appearance. Working on a computer also has the benefit of being able to make changes quickly and easily without having to redo the entire pictogram.

      Teacher tip

This topic links directly with concepts covered in maths. Consider when this is taught in your maths curriculum and combine activites to complement one another.

      Equipment

Pupils will need access to a device with software that can create pictograms. Examples in this lesson use J2E pictogram https://oak.link/pictogram
