Creating digital images for a purpose

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can create a new image using parts of other images.

      Key learning points

      1. Images can be combined using image editing software.
      2. Image editing can be planned before working on a computer.
      3. New images can be created by combining and using parts of other images.

      Keywords

      • Design - a plan to show what something will look like before it is made

      • Publication - something that is made to communicate information (like a book, magazine or poster)

      Common misconception

Save and save as do the same thing.

Pressing save will save the file as the current filename and possibly overwrite an existing file. Selecting save as lets you specify a new file name and/or location.

      Teacher tip

This lesson requires pupils to plan their images out on paper first. You should model this and demonstrate why planning is an important step.

      Equipment

Pupils will need access to a device with software that provides freehand digital painting tools. Examples in this lesson use paint.NET https://oak.link/paint-net
