Web page layout
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can design my own web page for a purpose.
Key learning points
- When making a website you need to think about who it is for (the audience) and why you are making it (the purpose).
- The design of a web page should demonstrate the layout of the page and an indication of what content will be.
Keywords
Audience - the group of people the website is designed for
Purpose - why something is used or what it is for
Layout - specifies how items such as text and images are arranged on the page
Common misconception
The header of a web page is the title.
The header is a section of the web page where the title is normally located but includes information that describes features of a web page but that is not actually part of the web page itself.
Teacher tip
Encouraging pupils to plan their website layouts on paper allows them to experiment with ideas more flexibly before working on-screen.
Equipment
Pupils require access to a device with software that can create web pages. Examples in this lesson use Google Sites https://oak.link/google-sites

We use learning cycles to break down learning into key concepts or ideas linked to the learning outcome. Each learning cycle features explanations with checks for understanding and practice tasks with feedback. All of this is found in our slide decks, ready for you to download and edit. The practice tasks are also available as printable worksheets and some lessons have additional materials with extra material you might need for teaching the lesson.
The assessment exit quiz will test your pupils' understanding of the key learning points.
Our video is a tool for planning, showing how other teachers might teach the lesson, offering helpful tips, modelled explanations and inspiration for your own delivery in the classroom. Plus, you can set it as homework or revision for pupils and keep their learning on track by sharing an online pupil version of this lesson.
