      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can plan a healthy meal.

      Key learning points

      1. We need at least 5 fruit and vegetables every day (5 A DAY).
      2. We need to have 6-8 drinks a day. Water is a good choice.
      3. Meals should include 3-4 of the main food groups and a drink.

      Keywords

      • 5 A DAY - we need at least five fruit and vegetables each day

      • Meals - an occasion when food is eaten, such as breakfast or lunch

      Common misconception

Pupils may think that potatoes count as a vegetable.

In the Eatwell Guide, potatoes do not count as a vegetable. They are in the 'Potatoes, bread, pasta and rice' group.

      Teacher tip

Bring learning to life and use real food examples, such as breakfast cereals, milk and fruit. Create meal occasions. Allow pupils to smell and taste.
