      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can name and sort foods that are grown, reared and caught.

      Key learning points

      1. Plants are grown for our food, such as tomatoes and carrots, on farms or at home.
      2. Animals are reared for our food, such as dairy cows and sheep, on farms.
      3. Some of our food is caught, such as fish from the sea.

      Keywords

      • Grown - to sow, feed and look after plants

      • Reared - to feed and look after animals

      • Caught - to catch fish in nets, pots or fishing lines

      Common misconception

Our food comes from shops and supermarkets.

While food is purchased from shops and supermarkets, plants are grown, animals are reared and fish is caught for us to eat.

      Teacher tip

Link the food that is grown, reared or caught to what pupils eat - making it memorable and giving context. Use a range of images and videos to show pupils how our food is grown, reared and caught. Pupils could grow herbs, tomatoes and cucumbers at school, and use these to make a simple salad.
