Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Ensuring that our food is safe to eat is vital for health.
  2. Some foods need to be washed before being eaten raw, such as fruit and vegetables, to remove insects, dirt and bacteria.
  3. Some foods need to be prepared and cooked thoroughly to make them safe before being eaten, such as meat.
  4. Some foods can be preserved to keep them safe to eat in the future, such as freezing and canning.

Keywords

  • Food safety - all practices that are used to keep food safe

  • Foodborne - illness caused by consuming contaminated food or drinks

  • Bacteria - tiny, single-celled organisms (some are harmless, some cause food poisoning)

  • Mould - a type of fungus (some can be unsafe to eat)

  • Preserve - methods to keep food safe to eat in the future, such as freezing and canning

Common misconception

Mould on fruit, yogurt or bread can be cut off, so the remaining food can be eaten.

If food has mould, the food should not be eaten, especially with soft foods like bread, yogurt or fruit. It is unsafe to eat and can cause illness.
