      Threads

      Why this why now

Good food safety and hygiene is essential to make sure that the food we buy, store, cook, and eat is safe. It helps prevent food poisoning. Food labels help us to store and cook food to ensure safety, along with hygienic practices. This builds on work around food hygiene learning in Year 5, following procedures to ensure good food safety. The Food hygiene and safety, and The science of food threads are further developed and embedded in Year 7, highlighting ways in which the risk of food poisoning can be minimised.

      Prior knowledge requirements

      • Pupils can describe food being produced and processed in different ways.
      • Pupils can place the different stages of food production in a sequence.
      • Pupils know that food is processed at home and on a large scale to make it edible and safe.
      • Pupils know how to get ready to cook.

      Safe and edible food

Pupils explore different ways to store, prepare and cook food so that it is safe to eat. They examine food labels for safety and quality assurance marks, and make Cornish pasties to apply their food safety and food origins learning.
