The Eatwell Guide: for me and you

Downloads can take a few minutes, especially for larger files or slower connections.

      Threads

      The science of food
      Food preparation and cooking
      Healthy eating and nutrition
      Food hygiene and safety

      Why this why now

Our diets, the food and drink consumed over time, should follow the food groups and proportions as depicted in the Eatwell Guide. Being able to plan against these principles helps to establish healthier eating patterns, as well as address less healthy patterns. This builds on previous learning through the Healthy eating and nutrition thread, such as knowing the food groups, and putting advice into practice. Energy and nutrients provided by the food groups, and their role, are examined in Year 5.

      Prior knowledge requirements

      • Pupils will be able to list a range of factors that determine what people eat and drink.
      • Pupils will be able to plan simple healthy meals.
      • Pupils will be able to justify food choice for different occasions.
      • Pupils will know that different food is eaten on special occasions.
      • Pupils will know that people can have a reaction to specific foods, known as a food allergy.

The Eatwell Guide: for me and you

In this unit pupils map and plan meals inline with the Eatwell Guide food groups, suggesting improvements for the future. Pupils make a frittata, highlighting the food group included, as well as possible additions.
