      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can shape and join fabric shapes accurately.

      Key learning points

      1. Adapting existing products can make them more accessible to as many people as possible.
      2. Fabric templates for pockets support accuracy.
      3. Different sewing techniques may be needed to join pockets.

      Keywords

      • Adapt - make changes to a product

      • Empathy - understanding others' feelings and experiences

      • Technique - a particular way of doing something

      • Template - a guide to draw and cut a shape

      Common misconception

All pocket designs will be attached in the same way.

Different techniques, such as of loops and slots, should be chosen to suit the pocket type.

      Teacher tip

If needed, a simple belt could be made using a strip of stiff fabric with a hook and loop fastener. Seatbelt webbing or elasticated money belts are good alternatives to buckle belts, which may not be accessible.

      Equipment

A belt (see teacher tip), paper, fabric, needles, thread. Premade paper templates can be found in the additional materials document.
