      New and emerging technologies

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can use specific examples to explain the impact of new and emerging technologies on the manufacture of products.

      Key learning points

      1. New and emerging technologies, such as automation have impacted on industrial manufacturing processes.
      2. New and emerging technologies have impacted on business and enterprise methods.
      3. AI, drones and biometrics are specific examples of new and emerging technologies.

      Keywords

      • Obsolete - no longer used or useful

      • Automation - use of technology to perform tasks

      • Human error - mistakes made by humans

      • Biometrics - uses unique body features, like fingerprints, for identification

      Common misconception

New and emerging technologies have only positive impacts.

New and emerging technologies can make some products obsolete. It can also mean that many workers with limited skills lose their jobs to robots. These workers may find it difficult, or may not want to, retrain.

      Teacher tip

If you know of any local manufacturing businnesses, this would be an ideal time to take your students on a trip or invite them into you! Look around your classroom at your own examples of new and emerging technologies (such as 3D printers) and show them off. This is such an exciting topic; enjoy!
