Keywords

Co-ordination - joining two simple sentences with 'and', 'but' or 'or'
Joining word - a word that joins words or ideas
Common misconception
Pupils may think that a joining word can be used at the start of a sentence.
Teach that the joining word acts as the link between two simple sentences and so no full stop is needed.
Teacher tip
Use the Y2 grammar unit on compound sentences to explicitly teach this skill if children need more support. Encourage children to peer edit each other's work to look for correct use of co-ordinating conjunctions.
