      Formation of m, n, r, h, k, b and p

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

      I can form the letters m, n, r, h, k, b and p.

      Key learning points

      1. The letters m, n, r, h, k, b and p are in same letter family
      2. The letters m, n, r, h, k, b and p are all formed by going down, back up and over
      3. The letters m, n and r are x-height letters
      4. The letters h, k and b have ascenders
      5. The letter p has a descender

      Keywords

      • X-height letter - a letter which sits between the baseline and the x-height line

      • Letter family - groups of letters that are formed in similar ways

      • Ascender - the part of a letter that extends above the x-height line

      • Descender - the part of a letter that reaches below the baseline

      Common misconception

Children will often want to take their pencil off the page for the letter k.

Emphasis should be placed on 'keep your pencil on the page' when modelling this letter.

      Teacher tip

Children can find the letter k a challenging letter to form so we advise additional modelling when the children are doing the task if they find it challenging.
