Character description of the wolf in 'The Three Little Pigs'

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can join two ideas together to describe the wolf.

      Key learning points

      1. Adjectives can be used to describe a character's personality, such as 'cunning' wolf.
      2. Adjectives can be used to describe a character's appearance, such as 'furry' wolf.
      3. When you use two adjectives to describe a noun, you need to separate them with a comma.
      4. Two ideas can be joined together using 'and' to form one compound sentence.
      5. In a compound sentence, each idea must make complete sense.

      Keywords

      • Character - a person or animal in a story

      • Personality - the special qualities that make a character themselves

      • Appearance - what someone or something looks like

      • Adjective - adds detail to a noun

      • Joining word - a word that joins words or ideas

      Common misconception

Pupils may not know what constitutes 'one single idea' to effectively create a compound sentence.

Use the sentence scaffolds as much as possible, so that pupils are only adding their own adjectives. The purpose of this lesson is initial introduction to joining two ideas, rather than expecting them to be secure, so model as much as is needed.

      Teacher tip

Create a class word bank to provide or show pupils as you go in the lesson to help them to think of and spell the adjectives to describe the wolf.
