Sequencing and retelling 'The Three Little Pigs' using a story mountain
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can put a story in order on a story mountain and use it to retell the story.
Key learning points
- Retelling a story helps us to remember the main events and use storytelling language, such as 'Once upon a time,'.
- Story mountains map out the beginning, middle and end of a story.
- Traditional tales often have repeated main events.
- Using sequencing language such as 'The next day,' at the start of the sentence helps the reader follow the story.
- Using descriptive language will make the story more interesting when writing.
Keywords
Story mountain - a way to sequence and order key events to retell a story
Sequence - following the order in which a series of events happened
Main events - the main parts of a story
Adjective - adds detail to a noun
Common misconception
Pupils may struggle to know what storytelling language to use.
Provide the pupils with a word bank of options. Provide language starting with a capital letter followed by a comma to demonstrate the correct punctuation, such as 'First,' or 'One day,'
Teacher tip
Do not stick the story mountain into pupils' books if you are continuing the unit. It will be useful for pupils to have access to the story mountain when they come to write their story.
