Spelling words with the suffix -ant
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can spell words using the suffix -ant.
Key learning points
- Words that end with suffixes -ant and -ent can sound like ‘unt’ when we speak.
- The -ant spelling may be found after a ‘hard c’ or ‘hard ‘g’.
- Words ending in -ant sometimes have related words where the vowel sound is clearer, like with participant -participation
- We just need to learn how to spell many words ending in -ant as there may not be a rule or pattern to help us.
- How to spell the curriculum words: relevant, knowledge and familiar.
Keywords
Root word - the base word from which other words are formed often by adding prefixes or suffixes
Suffix - a letter or group of letters added to the end of a word to change its meaning
Common misconception
Pupils may easily confuse the vowels in -ant and -ent spellings.
Say the word clearly how it is spelt in order to emphasise the vowel spellings.
Teacher tip
Use word cards with -ant and -ation words on them and encourage pupils to match related words. Ask pupils to say the words out loud within a sentence, to help reinforce pronunciation and meaning.
