  • Noun - a naming word for people, places or things

  • Compound word - two or more words joined together

  • Hyphen - a punctuation mark that can join two or more words to make a compound word.

Common misconception

It can be difficult to know when words should be hyphenated and when they should not.

Notice patterns such as vowel sounds and encourage the use of dictionaries to check words pupils are unsure of.

Use images to help pupils to understand the vocabulary used in this lesson. If pupils do not understand a word, they will struggle to spell it.
