I can use the words 'howl', 'whirlwind' and 'windswept' effectively in multiple contexts.

      Key learning points

      1. 'Howl' is a verb which means to cry or wail.
      2. 'Whirlwind' is a noun which means a hurricane or tornado.
      3. 'Windswept' is an adjective which means beaten by the wind and untidy.

      Keywords

      • Noun - a naming word for people, places or things

      • Adjective - a word that describes a noun

      • Verb - a doing or being word

      • Synonym - a word that has the same or similar meaning to another word

      • Word pair - words that often appear together

      Common misconception

Pupils may find it difficult to use the word ‘howl’ in a sentence.

Explain that as this word is a verb, we can change the tense to make it fit with our sentence. ‘Howled’ or ‘howling’ are alternatives.

      Teacher tip

Ensure pupils understand that each ‘wind' word has a different word class and therefore will be used differently. The synonyms and word pairs will help distinguish this. For example, ‘if this word is noun, what will its synonyms/ word pairs be?'
