      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can use the preposition 'de' to show description or possession.

Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. The sound [è/ê] is pronounced as in the word 'tête'.
      2. The preposition 'de' can be translated as 'of'; to show possession, for example: 'le frère de Sam', Sam's brother.
      3. The preposition 'de' (of) can also show description, for example: 'le Carnaval de Menton', Menton Carnival.

      Keywords

      • [è/ê] - pronouced as in 'fête'

      • De - French preposition meaning 'of'

      Common misconception

Like in English, we use 's to show possession in French.

In French, unlike English, there is no possessive apostrophe. Use the preposition 'de' (of) to show possession: Pierre's brother - le frère de Pierre.

      Teacher tip

Search for and watch videos of the Menton Carnival with your class to give pupils a greater understanding of the festival. You could also ask pupils to research key facts about the celebration and to share their findings with the class.
