Why this why now

This unit teaches pupils that 'de' means of, as well as its frequent uses conveying possession, e.g, La sœur de Pierre, and in compounds, e.g., La fête de Menton. Later pupils learn that 'de' also means 'from'. Pupils will already have begun to build a repertoire of -er verbs. In this unit, they learn that French singular present tense forms translate both simple and ongoing present tense in English. Later, pupils will extend this knowledge to plural present tense forms and in new contexts. Knowledge of adjective gender agreement and all 'e' sounds is strengthened.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils know the 'e' sounds [e] [eu] [é|-er|-ez] and [è|ê].
  • Pupils know singular present tense forms of regular -er verbs.
  • Pupils know 10 regular -er verbs: chanter, donner, écouter, parler, porter, préparer, regarder, répéter, trouver and utiliser.
  • Pupils know that, and how, singular regular adjectives agree for gender.

Activities: singular regular -ER verbs

In this unit, in the contexts of the Menton Carnival and family activities, pupils deepen their knowledge of different 'e' sounds, practise uses 'de' and use -er verbs in the present. They use prior knowledge of adjective agreement to describe photos of Menton's colourful citrus fruit sculptures.
