Key learning points
- The final consonant of a word is often silent in French. We call this SFC for Silent Final Consonant: dans.
- The vowel 'e' is often silent at the end of a word. We call this SFe, Silent Final ‘e’: timide.
- Adjectives change spelling based on the gender of the noun they describe.
- Most adjectives add an 'e' in the feminine form: perdu, perdue. Some adjectives change spelling: sérieux, sérieuse.
- Some adjectives end in an 'e' in both the masculine and feminine forms: calme.

Common misconception
Similar to English, you can pronounce the last consonant of a word in French.
The final consonant of a word is often silent in French: le petit chat. The letters c, r, f and l are exceptions to this rule: le sac neuf.
