Key learning points

  1. The final consonant of a word is often silent in French. We call this SFC for Silent Final Consonant: dans.
  2. The vowel 'e' is often silent at the end of a word. We call this SFe, Silent Final ‘e’: timide.
  3. Adjectives change spelling based on the gender of the noun they describe.
  4. Most adjectives add an 'e' in the feminine form: perdu, perdue. Some adjectives change spelling: sérieux, sérieuse.
  5. Some adjectives end in an 'e' in both the masculine and feminine forms: calme.

Keywords

  • SFC - silent final consonant, as in 'dans'

  • SFe - silent final 'e', as in 'timide'

  • Feminine form - form of an adjective that describes a girl, woman or feminine noun

Common misconception

Similar to English, you can pronounce the last consonant of a word in French.

The final consonant of a word is often silent in French: le petit chat. The letters c, r, f and l are exceptions to this rule: le sac neuf.
