Why this why now
Where several previous units have anchored pupil knowledge of singular 'être', this unit teaches plural forms and plural adjective agreement, in the context of school. Having already learnt to ask questions with interrogatives 'quoi' and 'quand', pupils here revisit 'comment' and add 'qui' to their question repertoire. Plural pronouns 'ils' and 'elles', they, are now applied to objects as well as people. Pupils also learn numbers 16-31 which enable them to talk about dates. This introduction to plural present tense French verbs is extended in later units with plural 'avoir' and -er verbs.
Prior knowledge requirements
- Pupils have secure knowledge of the most common sound-symbol correspondences in French.
- Pupils know the numbers 1-12.
- Pupils can form information questions adding an interrogative (e.g., quoi) to the end of an intonation question.
- Pupils know that subject pronoun 'il' and 'elle' mean 'it' as well as 'he' and 'she' and refer to objects.
