Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. Practising the sound-symbol correspondence [eu] in a poem can anchor the knowledge.
      2. Adjectives ending in -eux change to -euse in the feminine form.
      3. ‘Je suis’, ‘tu es’ and ‘elle, il est’ are all parts of the verb ‘être’ (to be, being).

      Keywords

      • Eu - pronounced as in 'jeu'

      • Adjective - a word that gives information about a noun

      • Masculine (m) form - form of an adjective that describes a boy, man or masculine noun

      • Feminine (f) form - form of an adjective that describes a girl, woman or feminine noun

      • Être - French verb meaning 'to be, being'

      Common misconception

Adding an -e to an adjective is the sole way to change an adjective from the masculine to the feminine form.

There are different ways to change a masculine adjective to a feminine adjective; adding an -e to the end being the most common. When an adjective ends in -eux in the masculine form, however, it changes to -euse in the feminine form.

      Teacher tip

You may wish to ask pupils to learn the French poem off by heart, in their own time, and to perform it to the class. This will allow for greater consolidation of the SSC [eu] and to practise their oracy skills.
