Key learning points
- Practising the sound-symbol correspondence [eu] in a poem can anchor the knowledge.
- Adjectives ending in -eux change to -euse in the feminine form.
- ‘Je suis’, ‘tu es’ and ‘elle, il est’ are all parts of the verb ‘être’ (to be, being).
Keywords
Eu - pronounced as in 'jeu'
Adjective - a word that gives information about a noun
Masculine (m) form - form of an adjective that describes a boy, man or masculine noun
Feminine (f) form - form of an adjective that describes a girl, woman or feminine noun
Être - French verb meaning 'to be, being'
Common misconception
Adding an -e to an adjective is the sole way to change an adjective from the masculine to the feminine form.
There are different ways to change a masculine adjective to a feminine adjective; adding an -e to the end being the most common. When an adjective ends in -eux in the masculine form, however, it changes to -euse in the feminine form.
