Key learning points
- Numbers 1-31 in French are tricky to remember and so they must be practised regularly.
- The verb 'faire' means both 'to do, doing' and 'to make, making'.
- 'I do, make' is 'je fais', 'he does, makes' is 'il fait' and 'she does, makes' is 'elle fait'.
- Negative sentences in English have 'don't' before the verb. In French we 'sandwich' the verb between 'ne' and 'pas'.
- For example: 'je fais le lit' (positive) and 'je ne fais pas le lit' (negative).
Keywords
Negative - expresses negative meaning, showing that something is not true, does not happen or does not exist
Ne ... pas - used around a verb to make the sentence negative: je ne fais pas l’activité
Common misconception
To make sentences negative in French, you need to put the equivalent of 'don't' before the main verb.
To make sentences negative in French, you 'sandwich' the main verb between 'ne' and 'pas'. There are two elements which need to be in place. For example: 'je fais le ménage' (positive) 'je ne fais pas le ménage' (negative).
