      Key learning points

      1. Many sports in French are cognates but their pronunciation is quite different and therefore needs practice.
      2. Use 'aimer' + 'le, la' to say which sport you like e.g. 'j'aime le football'.
      3. Use 'jouer' + 'à + le, la' to say which sport you play e.g. 'je joue au football'.
      4. You can join two clauses together to form longer sentences e.g. 1) 'Quand il fait beau ...' 2) '... je joue au tennis'.

      Keywords

      • Jouer - French verb meaning 'to play playing'

      • Quand - French conjunction/adverb meaning 'when'

      Common misconception

To express 'I play tennis' I say 'je joue le tennis'.

To express 'I play' with any singular sport, you use 'à + le, la' after the verb e.g. 'je joue au tennis', 'je joue à la pétanque'.

      Teacher tip

When teaching sports it is always fun to invent an action to go with each one, choreographing a routine which becomes very familiar and helps students to recall the correct pronunciation of these cognates.
