A horrible week! 'Avoir' singular persons and adjectives after the noun

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can form sentences using singular forms of the verb 'avoir'.

Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. The 'e' at the end of the word makes no sound (SFE - Silent final e). The consonant before a SFe is pronounced: timide.
      2. 'Avoir' means to have: j'ai (I have), tu as (you have), il a (he has), elle a (she has). These are its singular forms.
      3. In English, adjectives come before the noun. In French, most adjectives go after the noun (postnominal adjectives).
      4. Adjectives must agree with the gender of the noun they describe. We often add an -e in the feminine form: vert - verte.
      5. Some adjectives, like rapide, end in an e in both the masculine and feminine forms: une voiture rapide.

      Keywords

      • SFe - silent final 'e', a word which ends in a silent 'e': timide

      • Avoir - French verb meaning 'to have'

      • Adjective - a word which gives information about a noun

      Common misconception

Like in English, adjectives go before the noun in French: a fast car.

Unlike in English, most adjectives go after the noun in French: une voiture rapide.

      Teacher tip
