My ideal teacher: singular and plural adjectives

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can form sentences using adjective agreement with plural adjectives, and the indefinite article 'des'.

Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. The SSCs (sound-symbol correspondences) [au], [eau] and [o] make the same sound.
      2. To refer to a masculine noun use the indefinite article un. To refer to a feminine noun use the indefinite article une.
      3. To refer to a plural noun use the indefinite article 'des' (some). It does not change based on the gender of the noun.
      4. Adjective agreement is the change of spelling of an adjective based on the gender and number of the noun it describes.
      5. We often add an 'e' to make an adjective feminine and an 's' to make it plural. Add an 'es' to make it feminine plural.

      Keywords

      • [(e)au], [o] - pronounced as in 'gauche' and 'photo'

      • Des - plural indefinite article meaning some

      • Indefinite article - the ‘a’, ‘an’ or some that comes before a noun (a tree, an elephant, some books)

      • Adjective agreement - when the ending of an adjective matches the noun it describes in gender and number

      • Plural adjective - an adjective in its plural form: deux livres intéressants

      Common misconception

Like in English, adjectives do not change spelling based on the number of the noun described: a blue book - some blue books.

Unlike in English, adjectives change spelling based on the number (and gender) of the noun they describe: un livre bleu - des livres bleus.

      Teacher tip

Ask pupils to describe their own ideal teacher using the indefinite article 'des' and plural adjectives.
