      Why this why now

This unit embeds present tense knowledge, particularly of -re verbs as pupils talk about what, where and who they know. Canada provides the contextual and cultural backdrop as pupils learn about the country whilst embedding the negative 'ne...pas' and adding 'ne...jamais' in single-verb structures. Pupils develop their confidence in longer writing tasks with new and known high frequency vocabulary.

      Prior knowledge requirements

      • Pupils know that the preposition à can mean 'to' or 'in'.
      • Pupils know that à is used to mean 'to' or 'in' with cities and en is used with feminine countries.
      • Pupils know the modal verb 'savoir' in the present tense.
      • Pupils can conjugate verbs like 'entendre' in the present tense.
      • Pupils know how to negate a sentence using ne...pas (de).
      • Pupils know that [ai] sounds like [é].
      • Pupils know the question words quoi, où and qui.
