Key learning points
- The SSCs [em] and [am] are identical nasal sounds.
- The verb 'célébrer' is a regular -er verb but the 2nd é in the stem changes to è in all forms except 'nous' and 'vous'.
- The French calendar months are similar to English but they do not have capital letters.
- French numbers 13-16 are 'treize', 'quatorze', 'quinze' and 'seize'.
- Numbers 17-31 are made up of a combination of hyphenated numbers e.g. 'dix-sept', 'vingt-deux', 'trente-et-un'.
Keywords
[em/am] - sound-symbol correspondence like the [am] in 'camp' or the [em] in 'temps'
Célébrer - French verb meaning 'to celebrate' or 'celebrating'
Common misconception
Combination numbers in French are written like this: 'dix sept', 'vingt deux'.
French numbers which are made up of a combination of more than one number must be hyphenated, e.g. 'dix-sept' (17), 'vingt-deux' (22), and 'trente-et-un' (31).
