Key learning points

  1. [é/er/ez] is pronounced as in 'écrire'.
  2. To form -er verbs in the present tense, remove -er and add the endings -e, -es and -e for the singular verb forms.
  3. To say ‘(in order) to do something’ or ‘without doing something’, use pour/sans before a verb in the infinitive.
  4. Ask intonation questions in French by raising your voice pitch; add a question word at the end for more information.

Keywords

  • [é/er/ez] - pronounced as in 'écrire'

  • -er verb - a verb whose infinitive form ends in -er

  • Intonation - rise and fall of the voice in speaking

Common misconception

When you add a question word at the end of a question, there is no need to change your intonation.

It is important to use your intonation by raising the pitch of your voice at the end of all questions in French.
